Great Faith
Children's sermon
Object:
Hula Hoop or circle made out of ribbon, twine or rope
Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” (v.28a)
Good morning, girls and boys,
What an amazing morning to come to church today. I am so glad to see you and talk to you about a wonderful story from the bible.
Let me begin by showing you this circle. Now let's get into this circle. (Physically, all move into the circle) It's fun for us all to be together in this circle. We don't want anyone to be left out. To be left out is to be sad. To be kept out is even more sad and painful.
Jesus met a woman one day, from a different place and culture. She was from a place called Tyre and Sidon. Jesus' mission at that time was not for people of that area. So she was not in the same circle. She was an outsider. She must have been very sad and lonely.
This far away woman's daughter was ill and tormented by a demon. She pleaded to Jesus to help her even though she was not in Jesus's mission circle. Jesus reminded her that he was working with others. She insisted. She was desperate. She believed Jesus could help and heal her daughter.
Jesus was stunned by this woman's faith in him. He blurts out, “Woman great is your faith! Let your daughter be healed.” And you know what, boys and girls, not only was the woman's daughter healed, but both she and the daughter were now also in Jesus' circle.
When you see someone on the outside of your circle what will you do?
Yes, invite them in. Be their friend. Include them in your circle at school, at play and here at church.
Prayer: Dear loving Jesus, as you have included us in your circle in Holy Baptism, lead us to bring others on the outside into our circle with us. Amen.
