Grow in the Lord
Children's sermon
Object:
yard stick
The Point: You can grow in many ways, but the most important is to grow in the Lord
The Lesson: Merry Christmas, boys and girls. Yes, it is still Christmas, and thank you for coming up to share this time with me. Do you know what this is? (show yard stick; let the children answer) Yes, it’s a yard stick. It is called that because it is 36 inches long, a yard. When I was growing up my mother would take a yard stick and use it to see how tall I was getting. She would make a little mark on the door frame in our kitchen and then measure from the floor to the mark. The date and inches were written next to the mark. It was fun to see the mark get higher each year as I got older.
There are many ways to grow as we get older. We grow in height. We grow in weight, sometimes maybe too much. We grow in wisdom and knowledge. We grow in our abilities and talents like: playing baseball or hockey, or in art or music, or in typing or texting. There are a lot of ways to grow
From our Bible story Luke tells of an incident in Jesus’ childhood. Jesus was twelve years old and growing, in some ways just like you. On one occasion he had gone to Jerusalem with his parents to worship. On the way home his parents didn’t realize that Jesus wasn’t with them. They traveled in big groups for protection in Jesus’ day. When Jesus’ parents realized he was missing they went back to Jerusalem to find him.
Do remember where they found Jesus? That is right. He was in church, in the temple. Luke records that everyone was amazed at the wisdom and knowledge of Jesus.
We grow in a lot of different ways, but the most important is our growth in faith. Jesus was in his Father’s house listening and teaching. Growing and preparing for the time when his faith would reveal God’s great love for all. It is important to grow in faith too. Sunday school, daily prayers, listening to Bible stories are all ways to help us to grow in faith.
We can grow in height, in weight, in strength, in wisdom, in abilities, and in faith. Those are all important ways to grow. But, only our growth in faith will last forever.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Jesus, we still feel the joy and excitement of celebrating you birth. May it help us to continue to grow in faith. Jesus, strengthen the faith of these children in the gift of your Holy Spirit. Lord Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
