Guide to Heaven
Children's sermon
Object:
a guidebook to Italy (or any country)
The Point: Jesus wants us to know what the kingdom of heaven is like.
The Lesson: Good morning boys and girls. Thank you for coming up to share this time with me. Have you ever wondered what another country might be like? (let children answer) I have always wondered what Italy is like. Some day I may have the opportunity to actually go and visit Italy. I went to the library and checked out this book about Italy. Even though I haven't been there, this guidebook on Italy has helped me to understand a lot about the country. Rome is the capital. Do you know what the ancient ruins of Rome are called? (let children answer) It is the Colosseum. Saint Peter's Cathedral is in Rome too. It also has the famous statue of David in the city of Florence, which is north of Rome. A city in Italy, Venice, has streets that are waterways. Boats are used instead of cars to get around. Look at some of the beautiful mountains, valleys, and shores in Italy. I haven't been to Italy but now I know something about what it is like.
Jesus does the same thing for us today. By telling us stories, Jesus is revealing to us what the kingdom of heaven is like. Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven has a very small beginning but will grow to be very large. It is like a mustard seed that is tiny; from that little seed a great plant will grow, and it will offer shelter and comfort to the birds. The kingdom of heaven will give us shelter and comfort too. Jesus said the kingdom of heaven is like yeast. Yeast doesn't look like it would be a very important ingredient to make bread but ask your mother. Yeast makes all the difference. The kingdom of heaven will spread throughout the whole world touching lives and making a difference. There is nothing more important in all of life than to be a part of the kingdom of heaven. It is like the most precious pearl in all the world. Jesus has given us a guidebook to the kingdom of heaven so that we can have an idea of what it is like.
The next time you wonder about a distant country, you can go to the library and get a guidebook for that country and learn about it. And the next time you wonder about heaven, you can read the Bible. It is God's guidebook for us to heaven.
Closing Prayer: Jesus, thank you for helping us to know about the kingdom of heaven. Bless, Lord, all your children that they be a part of your great kingdom. With the help of your Holy Spirit may we share the good news of your kingdom's grace. Jesus in your holy name we pray. Amen.
