"I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now." (v. 12)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) How many of you like to listen to the radio? (allow answers) What do you listen to on the radio? (allow answers) Today we don't listen to the radio as much as people did before there were televisions. Before there was TV, people used to sit around and listen to the radio! Back then, radio didn't just play music. A radio station would play some music, but it would also have lots of radio programs. Radio programs might be news programs, or programs for kids. There was one radio show called "Hear It Now." "Hear It Now" was a radio program that had the "actual sound of history in the making."* The program would record sounds from things that were happening at the time -- maybe a sound clip from a baseball game, or the sound of guns firing in a war zone. It was a radio program that brought people the sounds of their time.
"Hear It Now" had people listen to things they could understand and believe, because these things were happening in the world around them. We like to listen to things we can understand and believe. Sometimes there are things we are not ready to hear. It is these things that our Bible verse talks about. In our verse, Jesus says to the disciples, "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now." Jesus had more to say to his disciples, but he knew that they would not understand or believe his words. He had to wait for his disciples to grow in their faith enough to understand what he had to tell them.
Sometimes we might face a problem like this in our lives. Maybe we have something we want to tell our baby brother or sister, but they are too young to understand what we are saying! There's nothing we can do about that. We just have to wait for our baby brothers and sisters to grow old enough so that they can understand what we are telling them.
It can be the same for us, too. When we are small, there are some things our parents do not tell us. When our parents don't tell us things, we might feel angry or left out. But our parents are not keeping secrets from us on purpose. They know we are not old enough to understand or believe what they are talking about. Someday when we are older, they will be able to tell us everything we want to know; but while we are still learning and growing, there are some things that have to wait. We, like Jesus' disciples, must learn to be patient and wait until we are able to understand and believe the things we are told. We can't hear everything now; some things will need to wait. Amen.
