Help for my weakness
Children's sermon
Object:
a small portable TV (or a copy of TV Guide)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you love to watch
television? (Let them answer.) How many of you think you watch it
too much? (Let them answer.) I watch it too much, also. I watch
it so much that I even brought a set to church with me. There is
something on soon that I just have to watch. Do your parents ever
tell you that you watch too much television? (Let them answer.) I
thought so. When we watch too much television, it is called a
weakness. I have a weakness for television. Some people have
other weaknesses. Some people talk too much. Others eat too much.
Others spend money too often. All those things are weaknesses.
There is another weakness that many of us have. It is a weakness in knowing how to pray. Many people don't know how to pray. In fact, Jesus' own disciples didn't know how to pray. Have any of you ever had that problem? (Let them answer.) Our lesson this morning tells us that there is someone who will help us pray. That someone is the Spirit of God. Our lesson says that the Spirit helps us in our weakness about praying. Often, at home, when you need someone to help you with something, you ask your parents for help. Think of the Spirit of God being like your parents when you need help in praying. The Spirit helps everyone who does not know how to pray. Prayer with God is more than just saying, "Now I lay me down to sleep," or "Thank you for this food," or "God, I really want that toy, really bad. I'll be good if I get it." Prayer is more than that.
For many people prayer is a hard thing to do. Not knowing how to pray is hard. The lesson this morning tells us to let God's Spirit help us pray. The Spirit knows how to pray. The Spirit wants to help us pray. The Spirit knows what God wants for us. God loves us. Because of that, God's Spirit will help us pray. The next time you pray, ask God to help you. When you do, prayer won't be a weakness, like this television set is to me.
