Help wanted!
Children's sermon
Object:
popcorn kernels
Good morning! Are you all feeling strong and healthy this
morning? (Let them answer.) That's good, because I have a job for
one of you to do, and you're going to have to be very fast to do
it. Do you see these popcorn kernels? (Show the kernels.) I need
a volunteer to help me give one of these to people in the
congregation. Who would like to help? (Get a volunteer.) Okay,
here is what I want you to do. Give one of these kernels to every
person in the first ____ pews. (Designate as many as you want.)
Now, there is a time limit on this. When I say, "Go," you have
only ten seconds to deliver one to every person in those rows.
Are you ready? Go! (Let him/her deliver as many as possible in
the ten seconds and then stop.)
Well, he/she didn't get it done. Who can tell me why? (Let
them answer.) Of course, there wasn't enough time to reach
everyone. How could we get the job done in ten seconds? (Let them
answer.) Yes, we could do it if everyone took some kernels and we
worked together. Let's do it. (Give them all kernels and let them
deliver them.)
Jesus tells us that we have this same problem with telling
the people of the world about him. There are just too many people
and too few who are willing to work. We all need to tell people
about Jesus. If we all work hard at doing it, we will reach a lot
more people with the good news about Jesus. Let's ask God to help
us do that.
Dearest Father: There are so many people in the world who need to
hear about Your Son, Jesus, and there are so few of us willing to
help. Give us the courage and the strength to do our part, and by
the power of Your Holy Spirit, encourage all Christians to help.
Amen.
