Children's sermon
Object:
a can of food
Good morning, boys and girls. I want to tell you a story about
a little boy, about your age. The boy was always wondering how he
could help people. When I finish with the story, see if you can
tell me if he helped people.
One Thanksgiving, the boy's church collected cans of food to give to people in the community who were in need (hold up your can). The little boy made certain that his parents gave him some food to donate to the project. As the boy grew bigger, he outgrew his clothes. Sometimes his parents would take the clothes that no longer fit him to a special store. This is a story where other parents would shop. (If your community has a used clothing/thrift shop mention the name here.) In this story other parents, who couldn't afford to buy clothes for their children, could buy his older clothes at a price they could afford. The little boy's Sunday school class once sent the money they collected each Sunday to a country far away from his own. The money was used to dig a well for a school. The well allowed children who attended the school to drink water. Otherwise, these children wouldn't have had any water all day. Once a friend of the boy was in the hospital. The little boy made a get well card and mailed it to his friend. On one Sunday a visitor came to the little boy's Sunday school class. The little boy was very friendly to the visitor and made him feel glad he came to Sunday school.
Even though the little boy did all these things, he still wondered if he was really helping people. Then one Sunday in church, his pastor read these words from the Bible: "I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me." The little boy heard these words and still wondered, "When did I do any of this?"
Now, can any of you answer my question? When did the boy help others? (Let them answer.) This is what God wants each of us to do. When you do things like the little boy did, you, too are doing God's work. Remember that this week.
