Here, chick, chick, chick
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers: Today's lesson uses the image of God as a mother hen trying to gather her chicks, but they don't want to come. Sometimes God calls us, but we don't want to come either. We all have choices to make and we don't always make the right ones! If you have scraps of material to be used as a mother hen, please bring them. Otherwise the children may draw the hen or cut their own out of construction paper. Glue onto background paper. At a yard goods store purchase (or check your leftover trim box) a length of trim with yellow fuzzy balls on it. Have enough for each child to have five fuzzy balls to be used as chicks. Glue the chicks away from the mother hen in separate locations. Together decide on five things or choices that keep us from the mother hen (God). You might name such things as fighting, not sharing, too busy, too tired. Label each fuzzy ball (chick) with one of the reasons that we do not always come when God calls us. Label the whole picture: GOD IS LIKE A MOTHER HEN. Talk about choices we make each day. Send the picture home with the children.
Parents: There are many colorful descriptions of God. "God is like a mother hen" is only one of them. With your children see how many you can find from scripture or from your own and your children's imaginations.
