an original and a perfect laser copy of a written page
Good morning! Whose birthday are we celebrating today? (Let
them answer.) Yes, today is the birthday of Jesus. That's what
Christmas is all about, the birth of Jesus. Who was Jesus? Can
any of you tell me about him? (Let them talk about who he was for
a bit.)
Well, you all seem to know a lot about Jesus. Do you know
that Jesus, in addition to being the man who was born in
Bethlehem on that first Christmas, living here on earth for 33
years and then dying on the cross to pay for our sins, is also
God? (Let them answer.) That is really true. Jesus was a man, but
he was also God.
Look at these two papers. (Show the two sheets.) One of
these is the original and one is a copy. Which of them is the
original? (Let them answer.) We can't tell, can we? They are
identical. That's the way it is with Jesus and God, the Father;
they are identical. Now, this is a great mystery. We don't know
how it is possible for Jesus to be both true man and true God at
the same time, but we know that it is true because the Bible
tells us that it is true. Maybe, when we get to Heaven, God will
explain it to us, but for now it's a mystery.
So, today, as you celebrate the birthday of Jesus, remember
that you are celebrating the birth of the man, Jesus, but
remember that that man is also God. Jesus and God are one. Let's
say a prayer.
Dear Father God and Jesus: We know that You are both one and the
same God, and You know that we have trouble understanding this.
Help us just to accept that this is true and celebrate Your
birthday in a way that will show our love for You. Amen.
