"See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples." (v. 3)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) How many of you have one of these in your house? (show phone book; allow answers) Can you tell me what this is? (allow answers) Why do you use a phone book? (allow answers) Most everybody is listed in the phone book. You can find people's telephone number and house address. Why might you want to know someone's telephone number or house address? (allow answers) So you can give them a phone call, send them a letter, or visit their house.
How many of you have gone to visit a friend's house or a relative's house? (allow answers) Probably all of you have! What is it like to visit someone else's house? (allow answers) It can be a lot of fun because different houses have different places to explore. But it can be kind of scary, especially if you visit someone's home who has different rules. What are some rules that might be different at other peoples' houses? (allow answers)
It can be more scary if you go to someone's house in a different country! Some countries have similar customs and rules as we do in America, but many do not. If we went to the house of someone in a different culture, we wouldn't be sure of the rules in their house. We might be nervous that we would do something wrong, because we don't know what they expect guests to do.
We are more comfortable with things that we know. For example, it would be easier for us to visit the house of someone we know in our neighborhood than it would be to visit a stranger's house in another country!
Our Bible verse today talks about homes. In fact, it talks about God's home. Where do you think God's home is? (allow answers) According to today's Bible verse, God's home is here with us! He doesn't make his home in heaven, which is faraway from us on earth; instead, he lives right here with us, so that he is our neighbor. Why do you think he wants to be our neighbor? (allow answers) God wants to be our neighbor so that we can feel comfortable coming to visit him and talking to him. He wants us to bring him our problems, our hopes, our dreams. God wants to be available for us to talk to -- not somebody far, far away in heaven, but somebody a little bit closer to our home.
However, you won't find God in the phone book. Why do you think that God is not in the phone book? (allow answers) You can't find God in the phone book because he doesn't have just one address, like you and me. Instead, God is everywhere! No matter what street you are on or what house you go to, God will be there. Amen.
