How To Be Free
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
Yarn that will get wrapped around a child eighteen times with their hands down at their side.
I need a volunteer today. I also need kids that can count up to 18. We are going to wrap this yarn around ______ (name of child) and I want you to count with me. I am going to wrap it around 18 times. (Have volunteer stand with hands at their side as you wrap and count with the children.)
Our volunteer is a little like our lady in our Bible story. In Luke 13:10 it tells us that there was a lady that had been crippled for 18 years. She could not break away from being crippled just like _______ (name of child) cannot get out of the yarn right now. It took someone to break her free and that was the power of Jesus. It had been a very hard life. It says in Luke 13:11,
"she was bent over and could not straighten up at all."
It seemed like an impossible situation. _______ is in an impossible situation as well and cannot get out on their own. But in our story, Jesus said,
"woman you are set free from your infirmity."
We too are often in situations out of our own control and we need the touch of Jesus to be set free.
Would our volunteer like to be set free? Remember Jesus can cut us free from our impossible situations. (Cut the yarn around the volunteer.) When the lady in our story was set free it says she praised God! I bet our volunteer is also very happy and thanking God to be set free!
How can we apply this to our lives?
How will you respond to difficult and impossible circumstances? Will you come to Jesus and let Him set you free? We may not be physically crippled but we may be emotionally crippled. Will we let Jesus touch us and be set free? He can set us free from illness, from bad habits, from selfishness, from jealousy. May we not stay crippled but be healed to stand up straight!
