How Sweet Is Grace
Children's sermon
Object:
enough suckers for each child who comes forward (It might be fun to have enough suckers for all in attendance.)
The Point: God's gift of grace makes heaven available to all.
The Lesson: As the children come forward give a third of the children a sucker. Ask them not to take the wrapper off.
Good morning, children. I am glad that you chose to come forward to share this special moment with me.
In our lesson we heard Jesus teach us more about heaven. He taught us by telling a story. A farmer goes to town to look for some men to help him in the fields. He agrees to pay them a denarius. In Jesus' day that was about what it would cost to live for a day. Think how happy those men most have felt. They knew that they would have enough money to live on.
(Pass out suckers to another third of the children.)
At noon the farmer returns to town and sees more men looking for a way to earn a day's wages. The farmer felt sorry for them and sends them into his field to work. At 3 o'clock in the afternoon he again goes to town looking for men needing work. Think how fearful those without a job must have been about earning enough to live on. Again the farmer sends them to his fields, and at the end of the day he pays them all a denarius. They all have what they need to live on.
Jesus wants us to understand that God's love is big enough to welcome even those who come to him at the last moment of life.
Shall we pray? Oh! Some of you didn't receive a sucker. (to the children who have a sucker) Shall we give them a sucker as well? (to the children who didn't have a sucker) Were you worried that you wouldn't receive a sucker?
God wants us all to receive the peace and joy of heaven whether we receive it early or late. Heaven is God's gracious gift to those who look to him.
Optional: (suckers for everyone) The children will join me after worship to give everyone a sucker. God's gift of grace makes heaven available to all! Amen.
Closing Prayer: Now let us pray. Lord Jesus, thank you for your amazing grace that is always willing to bring us home to heaven. Help us to rejoice in the salvation of all your children. Amen.
