Important People
Children's sermon

Object:
Red carpet or red blanket or plastic red tablecloth
Today I have rolled out the red carpet for you. We are not famous people, movie stars or royalty, so maybe you have not had this kind of fancy treatment. But often for very important people, red carpet is actually put down for them to walk on.
You would think Jesus, the Son of God, would have had the red carpet prepare the way before Him. Do you know what He had instead? He had a man named John the Baptist. It says in Mathew 11:19,
I will send my messenger ahead of you who will prepare your way before you.
But what did that look like? Not red carpet! John was wearing camel hair, eating insects called locust, and was living in the desert. It is amazing that people listened to him!? But this is what Jesus said about him in Matthew 11:11,
I tell you the truth: among those born of woman there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist.
I believe that God works in ways that we wouldn't imagine. He used John the Baptist in such a great way. It is the message and the heart of the messenger that God is concerned with. Do we help to prepare the way for people to know about Jesus? It isn't so much about you looking just right or having the right qualifications. It's more about the message you have to tell and your enthusiasm and excitement to do so.
How can we apply this to our lives?
You may feel very small in comparison to John the Baptist or other great people of the Bible. Maybe you think you are not able to be used by God. But at the end of the verse telling us how great John was it says, "Yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he." (Matthew 11:11) God wants to use your life to prepare the way, to roll out the red carpet.
