Is It Raining?
Children's sermon
Object:
Umbrella
I have an umbrella with me today, not because it is raining outside (or maybe it is!) but I want to talk about how it can sometimes “rain” in our lives. Have you ever had a situation where just one thing after another goes wrong? You wake up late, you forget your homework, you hate what is for lunch, and your best friend gets angry at you. It goes on and on! You might say when it rains it pours. It just gets worse and worse.
That is how the people in our Gospel story were feeling. Things were very difficult. Their leader, Jesus, that they were hoping would free Israel, had died. But if that wasn’t bad enough, three days had gone by now and Jesus was to come back to life but when some women went to see Jesus, he was gone. (Maybe someone stole his body...) Angels told them Jesus was alive but was it true? It had rained and poured and caused many problems in their lives.
But little did they realize that they were not alone in all of this. Here Jesus was walking with them through this yet they were so blinded by their own rainstorm that they almost failed to recognize his presence with them.
How often it happens to us as well. Jesus is not pushy but gently speaks to us if we will allow him to do so. As Jesus' followers began to eat together and “calm down” they realized that Jesus had been walking with them through this storm.
How Do We Apply this to Our Lives??
Do you feel like you are in a rainstorm today? Is it raining and pouring problems? May we be quick to recognize that Jesus is beside us and wanting to have a conversation with us -- to bring us hope.
