Jesus Alone Is Important
Children's sermon
Object:
things the children would think important/valuable
The Point: The things of this world will be lost but not Jesus
The Lesson: Thank you, boys and girls for joining me in this time of sharing. I brought several items that I think are pretty valuable. What do you think? (let children answer) I have a video game, a cell phone, a twenty dollar bill, a watch, an iPad. I could have brought others things too. Do you have some really important treasurers? (allow the children to name some).
Do you realize that in a short time all these things will not be so important? Some will wear out or break. Some will be set aside because new items will take their place. Some will be forgotten because you will find different things of interest.
Jesus was leaving the temple in Jerusalem and one of his disciples commented on how big and beautiful it was. Jesus told him that it would not last. It would be destroyed and it was.
Jesus wanted his disciples and us to realize that all these things are only temporary. They will not last. I think it is okay to enjoy what you have, but these things should never be more important to us then our love and faithfulness to Jesus. They should never take the place of being with our family and friends.
The only thing that will truly last forever is our relationship with Jesus. Our faith and trust in Jesus will always be important to us. There will never be a time in your life when you will not need Jesus. That is really good news because with Jesus we will always have hope and a promise of eternal life.
Enjoy the things you have but remember they will never last. Only Jesus is truly there forever and ever.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Lord Jesus, thank you for the things we have in life that give us joy and comfort. Keep us ever mindful that they are temporary but your love and presence is forever. Jesus, our faith and trust is in you alone. Amen.
