Jesus First
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
a children’s game and a church bulletin
The Point: There are many options in life, choose to put Jesus first
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls. Thank you for joining me as we share God’s word together. I brought with me two items. The first is a game that my children loved to play. (show the game) They would play it all time if I would let them. I set a time limit of one hour for them to play the game. There are many other things to do including playing outdoors. I want them to experience and learn to enjoy other things in life. If all they did was to play this game they would lose sight of other options more important.
This is the second item I brought. Yes, it is our church bulletin. (show the bulletin) In our Bible reading today we find the story of Jesus being tempted three times by the devil. Every time the devil tried to get Jesus to choose his way instead of God’s way, Jesus quoted God’s word. Jesus had been faithful in worship and he knew the scriptures. When options confronted Jesus, he let God’s Word guide and direct his choice. What I think is important is to know that Jesus was prepared because he had been faithful in worship and reading God’s words.
Just like Jesus, you and I have options every day. We can play our favorite games all day long and ignore everything else, or we can choose to spend time learning about Jesus and God’s word through faithful worship and prayer. I believe that Jesus really wants us to make him first among the choices we have in life. If we always put Jesus first among daily activities then Jesus will guide our choices when we are confounded by life’s difficult choices.
Have fun and enjoy your favorite games. But remember to always keep Jesus first. Be faithful in worship and in prayer so that Jesus can guide you in your choices in life.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hands and hearts together as we pray. Jesus, you alone are truly important. Keep us faithful to the guidance of your word. May all our choices reflect your leading and grace. Lord, we choose to make you first in our lives. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
