Jesus Knows Our Worth
Children's sermon
There are many wonderful moments in this scripture selection. The one that stood out for me is the moment the man who use to be blind gets thrown out for telling his truth. He is treated unfairly by no fault of his own. It is an important lesson for us to learn and re-learn, some people will simply not be for us. We can be living examples of God’s love and a walking miracle and some will still turn us away. We can not let our value be downgraded by their response. Jesus will always be there to remind us of our worth.
In your message say something like:
Our Bible lesson for today is about a man who was born blind. He had never been able to see anything. This made life really hard. There were no service dogs to help him and no schools to go to that could teach him a skill to work. He had to rely on the kindness of the people in his town to give him food and clothes and everything he needed.
One day Jesus came to his town. People had always thought this man was born blind because God was punishing him or someone in his family. Jesus knew this was not true. Jesus could see that because this man was in need the town he lived in was kinder and more loving. Every day someone found a way to help him. Every time someone helped the blind man God’s love was brought to that town.
But people still thought God was punishing him, so Jesus healed the man to show that God loved him. It was amazing! No one had ever heard of someone who was blind from birth being healed and being able to see for the first time! It was so unheard of that the town started to doubt it was him. Some thought some long-lost twin had come back home. They thought there was no way this was true.
The man tried to convince them. He told them about things he knew from living among them for so long. He told them things only the original blind man would have known, but there were still people who did not believe him. The ones who did not believe got so mad they told him he had to leave the town.
This town, that use to be a safe place for him filled with people who cared for him and showed him kindness, turned against him. They could not understand that God had done something great for him. Maybe they were jealous that he got a miracle and they didn’t. Maybe they were upset that the man did not need them anymore to survive. There are lots of reasons someone might be a friend one day and not the next.
Jesus heard that the town was mean to the man and he came to see him. Jesus asked the man if he was going to be mad that Jesus changed his life. The man said he was still happy to be able to see and that his faith would help him make a new life with people who did care for him.
You see, when we put our faith in Jesus it changes us. It makes us more kind and accepting. We may choose to be friends with people others think are weird. We might want to spend our time at church or reading the Bible or praying and some people will think we aren’t choosing the right thing. Our faith is always the right choice, though. Faith makes us stronger and more loving, and able to bounce back when something bad happens.
There will be times when choosing our faith over popularity or easy solutions will be very hard, but Jesus will always be there to encourage us. Let’s say a prayer for strength in choosing this week.
God, You love us so much! We want to love you in every choice we make. Help us choose our faith so that we can live strong, loving lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
