Jesus Won!
Children's sermon
Object:
a trophy
“Jesus answered him, It is said, 'do not put the Lord our God to the test.'”
Good morning girls and boys,
I have a question. Have you ever been tempted to do something wrong?
(children share) (presenter shares personal temptations as appropriate)
Now have you ever heard the story of Pinocchio? Pinocchio was a wooden marionette made in Geppetto's workshop. Pinocchio was tempted to do wrong many times. When tempted by Cat and Sly Fox to skip school and join Stromboli's Traveling Marionette Show, Pinocchio fell to the temptation. When tempted to go to Pleasure Island where every day was a holiday with fireworks, doughnut trees, lollipops, and alluring Pink Ice Cream Mountains, Pinocchio could not resist. Pleasure Island was too appealing. Then when tempted to lie to Blue Fairy, Pinocchio's nose grows longer and longer with each lie. Poor Pinocchio, temped to lie, he gave in, he lied – long, long nose.
Today we have a marvelous true story of Jesus being tempted in the wilderness.
Three times the devil with great persuasive powers, tempted Jesus to do wrong.
“Jesus,” he shouted “if you are the Son of God, turn these rocks into loaves of bread.”
Jesus sais “no way, one does not live by bread alone.”
“Jesus,” the devil tempted, “I will give you all the kingdoms of the world if you worship me.” Jesus replied, “no way, worship only the Lord.” “Jesus,” the devil insisted, “throw yourself from this pinnacle of the temple so the angels will miraculously save you.”
“No way,” Jesus answered, 'do not put the Lord our God to the test.'”
The devil tempted. He lost. Jesus resisted. He won over the devil. (show trophy)
When you and I are tempted, sometimes we win, and sometimes we lose.
But, because Jesus won, (pass trophy around) we are given this winning trophy. In baptism it becomes our own. Redeemed, and saved, we win because Jesus won!
What about the wooden marionette, Pinocchio? Pinocchio's heart was changed. He saved Geppetto from drowning and proved he'd changed. Then the little wooden marionette, Pinocchio, turned into a real living flesh and blood little boy.
Prayer: When we are tempted to sin, we will remember, Jesus, you won over the devil's temptations for us. Your winning trophy is ours too. Thank you. Amen.
