Keep Your Faith First
Children's sermon
Object:
a Bible and a video game
The Point: Take care of your faith first.
The Lesson: Welcome girls and boys. I am blessed when you choose to come up and share with me each Sunday.
Today I brought two things that are important to me, my Bible and my favorite video game. I really enjoy playing this video game. In fact, I like to play it so much that I forget to do the things that I should do sometimes. Is this good or bad? (let children answer) That is what is called temptation. Sometimes I choose to play instead of doing what needs to be done. That is called giving in to temptation.
It is important to read and study your Bible every day. When the Bible is a part of your day, you are keeping your faith first in your life. That will help to fight the temptations that come your way.
Mark tells us that right after Jesus was baptized, he was led into the wilderness and tempted for forty days. Jesus knows what it means to be tempted to do the fun things instead of the things that God his Father wanted. Jesus always kept his faith first. We read about Jesus being faithful in worship and in prayer. He read and studied God's word. In fact, Jesus knew the scriptures so well that people were amazed at his teaching. Jesus always did God's will and didn't take short cuts. Because Jesus didn't give in to temptation, we have the hope and promise of life in heaven.
It is okay to have fun and to play your favorite video game. But it should only be done after you have finished the things expected of you. Every day you should read your Bible and say your prayers. Every day do something around your home to help your parents or your brother or sister. Every day keep your faith first. When you have taken care of the first things, then you can relax and enjoy your favorite video game.
Closing Prayer: Let us share a prayer together. Lord Jesus, you were tempted even as we are tempted. You did not give into those temptations. You became our Lord and Savior. Help us, Jesus, to never give into the temptations that come our way. Jesus, empower us to always keep the things of faith first in our lives. Amen.
