The Key of Life
Children's sermon
Object:
a church key or set of keys
The Point: Jesus has the authority to give eternal life.
The Lesson: Good morning boys and girls, and thank you for coming to share with me on this Seventh Sunday of Easter. See what I have brought with me this morning? (let children answer) That's right a key. Does anyone know what this key will open? (get many answers) Those are good guesses. Does anyone know which door this key will open? (let children answer) Wow, you are right! This is the key that will open the front door of the church so everyone can gather here to worship the good news that Jesus lives and because he lives we too will live.
When I came to this church to be your pastor, I received this key. In many ways it is a sign that I have the authority and power to help guide and teach you about Jesus. With this key I can open doors and help prepare the church for worship. With this key I can open doors and meet with people to help them with their spiritual questions. With this key I can open doors and gather people together to study the Bible. With this key I can open doors and prepare and preach the good news of Jesus. With this key I have an important responsibility and a gift of authority.
This morning we heard John tell us about a wonderful prayer of Jesus. Jesus thanked his Father in heaven for the authority to open our hearts and lives to eternal life. He didn't receive a key. Jesus received the truth and with the truth Jesus opened the doors to the hearts of people. That key truth is that God our Father in heaven loves us so much that he sent Jesus to save us. Jesus came not to punish us for our sins but to forgive us and to guide us in the truth of eternal life. Jesus is your Savior and my Savior and the Savior of the world. That is the key that will unlock eternal life.
Now you have been given that key truth which is a saving authority and an awesome responsibility.
The next time you see a key unlock a door, remember the key of truth that will unlock your heart with the saving grace of God. Jesus is God's only Son who has come to save us so follow him always.
Closing Prayer: Let us pray: Jesus, thank you for coming to open our hearts to God's great love for all of us. In your authority forgive our sins and help us to always look to Jesus. As God's only Son and as our Savior we want to only follow you. Because you live, Jesus, may we live too. Bless all your children in Jesus' name. Amen.
