Lasting Treasure
Children's sermon
Object:
a piggy bank
The Point: The best treasure is laid up in heaven.
The Lesson: Thank you for coming up to share this moment with me.
How many of you have a piggy bank at home? (let children answer) Today, I brought my piggy bank. I think it is a good thing for everyone, young and old, to have a special place to save some money. When I get home at the end of the day, I put the change from my pocket into my bank. I am always surprised how fast it adds up. When my piggy bank is full, I empty it and take all the change to the bank. I do two things with it after the teller counts it. First, I take 10% and use that to do something for the kingdom of God. Sometimes there is a collection at church for a special need, and I will give it to that. Sometimes I give it to someone who I know needs some help. I always give it without letting them know who gave it. Second, the leftover monies I place in my savings account at the bank. It is important for you to have the habit of saving and to maintain a savings account. But your real treasure is not kept in a piggy bank or a savings account.
Jesus said in our reading this morning that where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. If we truly treasure our faith in Jesus, then we will do those things that spread God's kingdom. If our treasure is Jesus' love for us, we will love and care about others because Jesus loves and cares for others. If we truly treasure what Jesus has done for us, given his life so that our sins would be forgiven, we would do what Jesus wants us to do. He wants us to love God with all our heart and to love everyone with mercy and grace as he does.
When you treasure Jesus more than you treasure the things of this world, you will be laying up treasures in heaven and then that is where your heart will be.
It is a good thing to have a piggy bank and to be in the habit of always saving something. So the next time you put something in your savings account, remember your very best treasure is not here on earth but laid up for you in heaven.
Closing Prayer: Let us take each other's hand and unite our hearts in prayer. Lord Jesus, you bless us with earthly treasures. Help us to use them to support and spread your kingdom. Lord, our true treasure is your amazing grace that forgives our sins and opens the gates of heaven for us. May we always treasure you above all else. Jesus in your name we pray. Amen.
