Laws
Children's sermon
Object:
A stop sign (or hand-drawn replica)
What do I have here? (Let them answer.) Of course! This is a
stop sign. What does it mean? (Let them answer.) Yes! A stop sign
means that cars must come to a complete stop when they see one of
these alongside the road -- usually at an intersection. What
happens if car drivers don't stop? (Let them answer. Some will
say, "You get a ticket," and others may say, "You might get in a
wreck," and still others might say, "Nothing -- unless you get
caught.") It is the law of our land that at certain places a
person must stop the car. The law is there for our protection. If
there were no stop signs by your school, would it be safe to
cross the street? (Let them answer.) Of course not!
Laws are there for our protection. Has anyone ever told you, "You are not allowed to play in the street?" (Let them answer.) Why would anybody make such a law as that? (Let them answer.) Laws protect us. People who love us give us rules to live by so we don't get hurt.
God has laws, too. Can you tell me some of God's laws? (Let them answer.) Can you see how God's laws protect us? God cares so much for us -- God loves us so much -- that God has given laws for us to obey. God wants us to obey the laws because of love.
When we love others, we obey laws as well. That is why the Apostle Paul could say that the whole law of God -- the commandments -- can be summed up in one word: Love! When we love ourselves, we do things to help ourselves -- like obeying laws. When we love others, we do things that help and protect them -- like obeying laws. When we love God we do loving deeds for others -- like obeying God's laws.
I am so glad God loves us so much and gives us the chance to love others by obeying the laws of God.
