A Lesson On How To Be Great!
Children's sermon
Object:
An apron, a broom
“...whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant.” (v. 43b)
Good morning young folks,
What a blessing to see you this morning. I hope you are well and eager to hear a message from the Bible today. I love sharing and I know you love listening.
Today we will learn about how to be great. Yep, that’s what I said -- how to be great!
Have you ever been in a contest and you came out first? (children respond)
Have you ever run a race and won? (children respond)
Have you ever gotten an “A” on a test? (children respond)
It’s fun to come out first. It’s fun to win. It’s fun to be smart.
Jesus never discourages anyone to be great. It’s okay to be recognized. It’s natural to want to win and succeed. One day, Jesus’ disciples, James and John, asked to be important in Jesus’ coming kingdom. But their idea of being important was wrong.
Let’s suppose you go to a contest and you do well and the judges give you a prize.
Only the prize is not a trophy but an apron. (show apron) Strange? Yes very strange according to human standards, but not so strange in Jesus’ way.
Suppose you win a race and the prize is not a crown but a broom. (show broom) That’s really strange. But not strange the way Jesus describes how to be great!
Jesus explains to James and John, the other disciples and to us too, this lesson: “...whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant.”
Once, just before Jesus was crucified, he met with his disciples for supper.
Then he shocked everyone by putting on an apron and serving everybody by washing their feet.
Jesus’ lesson was that to be great one must be humble. To be great one must serve others and not wait around to be served. Can you think of ways you can serve others?
Prayer: O Lord, help us put on the apron and take the broom and serve others. Thank you for showing us the way to be truly great. Amen.
