Object:
a dog's leash
Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. (v. 18)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) How many of you have a pet at home? (allow answers) What kind of pet do you have? (allow answers) How many of you have a dog? (allow answers) Do you have a big dog or a little dog? (allow answers) Did you ever have to help train your dog? (allow answers) It takes a lot of work to train a dog! What are some things that you have to do to train a dog? (allow answers) That is right, one thing you must train a dog to do is walk on a leash.
People who get dogs for the first time often need help to train their dog. They read books that tell them how to train a dog, or they might go to a dog trainer to have someone else help them train their dog. It takes a lot of patience and effort to train a dog so that it behaves well in public -- no matter how big or small that dog is!
If you were training a dog for the first time, who would you go to for advice on how to train it? Would you go to someone who has never had a dog before? (allow answers) Or would you go to someone who has lots of dogs and has trained them before? (allow answers) Probably the second person! When you're learning something new, you want someone to help you who has done that thing before. Since they have been through it before, they know what works, what doesn't, and how to fix unexpected problems.
The same thing is true of a lot of things in life -- not just training dogs. If you are learning to cook, you want a teacher who knows how to cook. If you are learning to drive a car, you want someone with you who has a driver's license. If you are learning how to tie your shoe, you want to be taught by someone who can tie their shoes. It is easier to take advice from someone who is an expert at something than from someone who has never done it before!
This is kind of like the reason God sent Jesus to earth to live with us as a human. Jesus was born to human parents, so even though he is God's Son, he is also completely human. God could have chosen to send his Son as an angel or as a divine spirit on earth -- but instead, he sent his Son to be born in a stable and to be raised as a carpenter's son. God wanted to show us that it is possible for humans to live a godly life. Jesus, just like you and me, had lots of temptations in his life -- that means he had many chances that he could have sinned. But instead, Jesus kept his eyes on God. He lived a life free from sin so that we could see his example. Because Jesus was a human just like you or me, we can look to his example to help us to lead godly lives every day. Amen.
