Let anyone with ears listen! (v. 9)
Good morning boys and girls,
I'm looking for ears this morning. (looks around) (counts sets of ears) Oh, we have lots of ears for listening this morning. May I use your ears? (children answer)
We're going to play a little game. It's called “listen and identify.”
Here's how it works. Everyone close your eyes. I will make a sound from my sound pouch and let's be real quiet and see if we can guess what it is that makes the sound.
(Presenter pulls out an audial aid from sack and makes a sound.) What sound is that?
(Children make guesses -- and repeat as time and attention allows)
You are very good at this game. Thank you.
Jesus once said, “let anyone with ears listen.” He then told his disciples a parable, which is a made up story to teach an important lesson. A sower sowed some seeds and some fell on bad soil and some on good soil. The good soil yielded a bountiful crop.
But the disciples did not listen carefully. They didn't get the point of the parable.
The parable likened the seed to the Word of God. The Word of God is planted in various kinds of people's hearts. Some let the word die and others produced large amounts from the seed of the word of God.
When you and I read and study the bible or listen to our teachers and preachers we get to listen carefully. Why? God the Holy Spirit speaks through God's Word.
We are to listen, listen, listen. When we don't understand something we are to go to an adult who will help us get the message.
Are there questions you have about God, the Bible or the church that you don't quite understand? (Children may ask some general questions or more questions about the parable of the sower and the seed.)
I want the seed of the word of God to grow in my heart and life. What about you?
Prayer: Lord Jesus you are the Seed. Be planted deep in my heart and help me to listen.
Amen.
