Live Life with Power
Children's sermon
Object:
a small lamp with an extension cord
The Point: Jesus brought authority and power to God's word.
The Lesson: Good morning boys and girls. Thank you for sharing this time with me.
I brought a lamp with me this morning, and I have an extension cord that is plugged into an electrical outlet on the wall. The lamp is in good shape, and I see it has a light bulb. If I turn the lamp switch on and it doesn't light up, what do you suppose is the problem? (let children answer) Right, it isn't plugged into the extension cord. The lamp without power is still a lamp but without power it will never shine and get rid of the darkness. The lamp needs power to be all that it was intended to be.
Mark in our reading from the Bible tells us that Jesus was in a synagogue (a church) reading and teaching God's word. The people who heard him were amazed. The teachers of God's word in Jesus' day were like my lamp when it isn't plugged into the power cord. They didn't shed any light upon the people. They taught without power. When Jesus taught God's word, it came alive and brought light and hope to those who listened. They said that Jesus teaches with authority.
Jesus always trusted and prayed to God. The faith and power he brought to God's word brought it alive. I believe that the same is true for you. If you want the Bible to touch your heart and to guide your life, you need to be connected to Jesus. As you pray and seek to know Jesus, you are connecting to God's power to bring the Bible alive. Connection to Jesus will bring power and authority to your life as a child of God.
Next time you read your Bible, ask Jesus to empower God's word to shine in your heart and mind.
Closing Prayer: Let us take each other's hand and unite our hearts in prayer. Lord Jesus, as God's only Son, you brought power and authority to God's word. When we pray and open our Bibles to read, let God's word cast its light into our lives. Empower us, Jesus, that we too might share your word with conviction and faith. Jesus in your name we pray. Amen.
