Living in harmony
Children's sermon
Object:
a musical instrument like the organ or piano, or voices from the choir that can sing in harmony and disharmony
May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus. (v. 5)
Good morning, boys and girls. This morning I would like to introduce you to (a pianist, an organist, or some choir members) who will share with us a very important lesson. (introduce the person or persons)
Our parents and teachers try to teach us to work together, think together, and play together all of the time. Do you know what it's like to be in your home when there's a lot of disagreement going on? (let them answer) Perhaps you can remember a day at school when no one seemed to get along and there was a lot of fighting. Disagreement and fighting mean a lot of angry words, some crying, and even the possibility of someone getting hurt. They are very bad things.
In music, disagreement sounds something like this (have the musician or choir members play or sing in very loud disharmony; put your hands over your ears) Does anyone like this kind of music? Can we even call it music? (let them answer) Aren't these notes played all the time on the organ? We're used to hearing them played in the proper order and at a reasonable volume. The noise that comes from the notes being played too loudly or in the wrong order is called disharmony.
God is not happy with disharmony. As a matter of fact, Saint Paul writes that people should live in harmony. God loves us and wants us to care for one another and help each other grow in every way. Some people are strong and they should help the weak. Some people are rich and they should help the poor. People should blend together so that there is great harmony.
I want you to hear the same instrument playing in harmony. (let the instrument or voices make a very harmonious sound) How does that sound, compared to the other noise we heard a minute ago? (let them answer) It is quite a difference!
The children of God make a wonderful sound. When people care for one another, God is very happy. People who live in harmony also feel very happy. You can be a part of that harmony by caring for your brothers and sisters or your friends and classmates. Remember, when you cause a problem or are part of a problem, you sound like this. (create a blast of disharmony) When you are caring and help to solve problems, you bring harmony to God's world. (create a sound of harmony) You are a child of God and should live in harmony with all God's people.
