Living water
Children's sermon
Object:
a food object (fruit, hard-boiled egg, cabbage head,
etc.) and a glass of water
Good morning! I have here some food. I could say this is
"living food" because when we eat food, our body takes the food
and uses it to fuel our bodies. We have the power to jump, walk,
run, sit and stand because our body takes this (hold the food
item) and turns it into energy. Food is "living food" once we eat
it. If we don't eat it, it just rots and doesn't help us much.
One day Jesus met a woman at a well and he told her about "living water." He told her that whoever drank from that "living water" would never be thirsty again. She couldn't understand that. She came to get regular, everyday water out of the well. She came to get water that you could drink. Here Jesus, who didn't even have a bucket, was talking about "living water." It didn't make sense to her.
Jesus meant that anyone who believes in him would never die. He is like "living water" which our spiritual body uses as energy to help us live eternally. That is hard to understand, isn't it? That's even harder to understand than how this food (hold it up) becomes "living food" that powers our bodies!
The water of Baptism is like "living water" because it is not just water, but is water with God's promise in it. (If it is possible, pour the water from the glass into the baptismal font.) That means that those who were baptized were given a wonderful promise of eternal life. We can't understand it, but we can believe it and thank God for the "living water" of Jesus and the promises of Holy Baptism.
Dearest Jesus: Thank You for giving us yourself so that we can have eternal life. Amen.
