The Lord's Blessing
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
an invitation to a party
The Point: Jesus came to invite everyone into God’s loving family
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls. Thank you for joining me as we share God’s word together. Have you ever received an invitation to a party? (let the children answer) I have. When I have, I began to look forward to going to the party. The date is written on my calendar so that I don’t forget or plan something else on that date. Then I began to think about what I will wear to the party. If a gift is appropriate, I buy one and wrap it. It is exciting to be invited because parties are fun and because it means that I am worthy to be invited.
Jesus at the beginning of his ministry goes to his hometown, Nazareth. In worship he read from Isaiah. The prophet Isaiah says that the Messiah will be anointed with God’s Spirit to bring an invitation. Then Jesus says he fulfills the prophet’s word. Jesus brings to us an invitation to share in God’s family. The poor, the blind, the oppressed, and even prisoners are to receive the good news that God has invited all to become a part of his family.
This morning I brought an invitation. (show the invitation) I filled it out. You, children of God, are invited to a party every week. The place is here at church. It is a party to celebrate that Jesus is the Messiah, our Savior. Be sure to schedule our weekly party. Bring your offering to say thank you to Jesus. And celebrate in your heart because this is good news to you. You are invited to share in the life of God’s family.
Jesus invites you to share in the life of his family.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hands and hearts together as we pray. Lord Jesus, you are God’s invitation, inviting us to be a part of his family. That is such good news to us. With the gift of your Holy Spirit help us to accept your invitation and to faithfully join God’s family in worship every week. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
