Love As Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
List of family rules on a poster board / Jesus' commandment on reverse side.
The Point: As a child of God, Jesus gives us one commandment - to love as he loves.
The Lesson: Welcome children. I am thankful that you came up to share with me.
Rules help a family to live together. Good rules will encourage the family to support each other in the family. Every family has important things that need to be done so that the home will run smoothly. Family rules help to divide up the tasks so everyone in the family shares in the life of the family.
Does your family have rules? (Give the children an opportunity to answer and name some of them.)
I put some of our family rules on this poster: Wash dishes; Make your bed; Clean your room; Rake leaves / shovel snow; Do your home work; Don't miss church; Say your prayers; Say "Please" and "Thank you"; Don't fight with your brother or sister. When our family follows these rules we support and encourage each other.
Jesus gives us a rule for our family of faith. I wrote it on the opposite side of my poster: "Love one another as I have loved you."
Jesus love is very special. When Jesus saw that someone had a need, he sought to meet it. When Jesus met someone not accepted by the world, we would invite them to become a part of God's family. Jesus cared for all people. His love is so special that he was always willing to forgive. Jesus encouraged and supported people. When we love as Jesus loved, we encourage, support, forgive, invite all people to become a part of God's family. Out of love for us, Jesus gave his life that we might have life in God's family.
Jesus' love is so great that without Jesus we can't begin to love with his love. Make Jesus a part of everything you do at home, in our church, and wherever you are.
Prayer: Children, as we prepare to pray let us hold hands and unite our hearts in Jesus' love. Lord Jesus, you invite us to love as you have loved us. We know that apart from you we can't love as you love. Come into our hearts and our lives. With the gift of your Holy Spirit empower us as your family to love with your love. Jesus, in your name we pray. Amen.
