Make a prayer list
Children's sermon
Object:
a Christmas catalog
Good morning, boys and girls. It's getting closer to Christmas so I thought I'd make out my Christmas list. Why do we make Christmas lists? (let them answer) It lets people who want to give us gifts know what we want. How many of you have made a Christmas list already? (wait for a show of hands) Let's go around our group and each of you tell us one thing that's on your Christmas list. (go around the group and give them each a turn) There are a lot of things on your Christmas lists. How many things do you have on your lists? (let them answer) Some of you have ten things on your lists and some of you probably have 25 things on your list. When I look through a catalog, I see things I wouldn't even think of that would be nice to have for Christmas. While I'm looking at the Christmas catalog, my list gets longer and longer. Let's look at some of the things on my list. (show several pages marked in the catalog with things from your list) Are your lists exactly like mine? (let them answer) No, usually children have lots more toys on their lists than grown-ups do. Our ages are different so we want different things. When I was your age, I had lots of toys on my list, too. When you are older, you'll probably have lots of grown-up things on your list. This is a pretty big list. Do you think I'll get all these things? (let them answer) No, I might get some of them and I might get other things that aren't on my list. Some of them I'll like and some I won't! Do you always get everything on your lists? (let them answer) No, of course you don't.
Our lesson today is about a special list. It's not a Christmas present list. But it's kind of like it because we don't always get everything on it. It's a prayer list. Our verse says we should let God know what we want. It means that through prayers we can go to God and ask for anything we want or need or wish for. It might be some things on our Christmas list or it might be prayers for someone who is sick or sad or lonely. Can you each think of something to put on a list to God? (let them take turns) That's a big prayer list. Will we each get everything on our prayer list? (let them answer) No, we probably won't. We need to keep on asking for everything we want. That's what prayer is!
