Children's Activity
Object:
SHARING THIS WEEK'S GOSPEL THEME
AT SUNDAY SCHOOL AND AT HOME
Materials*:
1 cup lemon juice
Equivalent of 1 cup in sugar cubes
4 cups water
Pitcher
Dixie cups
Directions:
1. Mix lemon juice and water together. Give each child a tiny taste of the lemon water.
2. Talk about whether they liked the lemon water. Tell them that sometimes things happen to us that don't "taste sweet." Discuss what those things might be.
3. Talk about how prayer helps us look at things from a new perspective. Tell each child to take some sugar cubes.
4. Instruct each of them to think about something not-so-sweet that has happened to them or to someone they know. They have two choices: to be angry about this bad thing, or to ask God for help to understand it and deal with it.
5. Have them take turns putting sugar cubes into the pitcher of lemon water. Each time they put a sugar cube in, they should say one thing that they have prayed about: maybe for strength to get through something, for understanding, for peace, for a cure to illness, for a friend, for a specific outcome.
6. When all the sugar cubes are added, mix the pitcher well.
7. Give everyone a taste of the new lemonade. Talk about how our prayers can help a not-so-sweet situation become something we can handle. Talk about how we don't have to take situations as they are, but we have God that we can pray to for help and guidance.
*Lemonade recipe makes about six servings. Adjust appropriately based on number of children.
