A Miracle Seed
Children's sermon
Object:
Scruffy container filled with soil and a flower seed
“Very truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single fruit; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (v. 24)
Good morning boys and girls,
I have a question. Does anybody know what month we are in and what day it is today?
(children answer – March and the eighteenth)
You're right and do you know what's coming in two days?
(children may have no clue) In two days it's spring! And spring means planting.
Planting gardens, fields, and flowers. Oh what fun. I hope you get to plant something sometime this spring.
I have here a container and a seed and I'm going to throw away this seed by burying it in this dirty old dirt. (throws plant seed carelessly) But children you know what's going to happen? This seed that I'm trying to get rid of -- with some water and tender love, will pop up out of the dirt into a beautiful flower.
Jesus told his followers after they arrived in Jerusalem, he will be like that. When a seed is buried and dies it will grow and pop up into many beautiful seeds. Jesus meant that he would die and be buried but be raised up from the dead. And then he and his believers would be many.
So the next time you get to plant something, think about Jesus. After a period of time you will have a wonderful vegetable or flower, grass or even a grain.
What would you like to plant this spring? (children answer)
(Option: Here are packets of seeds for each of you to plant) Have fun and remember a seed is like Jesus -- buried but rose from the dead.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, though your disciples did not understand what was going to happen to you in Jerusalem, we get it. We know what happened and today thank you for saving us from sin and the devil. Amen.
