Like A Mother Hen
Children's sermon
Object:
Hen with chicks
“How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings...” (v. 34b)
Good morning little chickadees,
Have you ever been called a little chickadee before? (children respond) I call you little chickadee because a chickadee is a term of endearment and love. Good morning little chickadees. (children respond) So now what does a little chick say? (show photo of hen and chicks) (children respond) Peep, peep, peep.
What does a mother hen say? Cluck, cluck, cluck.
When a chicken hawk swoops by to attack a little chick, mother hen scurries her brood into the chicken house. When a fox slyly sneaks around, mother hen protects her little chicks from getting pounced upon and eaten.
A mother hen loves, protects, and shelters her chicks from all dangers. That's what mother hens and mother people do too.
One day while Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem he became very sad. He knew that the city of Jerusalem was the place where good people, like prophets, were mistreated and killed.
Jesus was really talking about what was going to happen to him – shortly. He would be mistreated and killed. He prepared the people for what was coming.
Even though while he prepared the people for what would happen to him in Jerusalem, he continued to cast out demons and to heal and help people in their desperate needs.
Jesus, in his sadness, imagined he was talking to the city of Jerusalem. He tenderly said, “How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings...” (show photo of mother hen and chicks)
That's good news for us too. Jesus, like a mother hen, spreads his wings over us. Jesus, our mother hen, protects and loves us even though the fox is around and intends to do evil. Little chickadees, we are safe in Jesus' love. Let's tell this good news to others.
Prayer: Dear mother hen Jesus, watch over us and protect us. We feel protected and safe when your heavenly wings surround us. Amen.
