“...blessed are you among women...” (V. 42b)
Good morning boys and girls,
I am loving seeing you today. How are you dear children? Getting excited for Christmas? Are you planning special things with your family?
(children respond) (presenter may share personal plans and/or experiences)
Today, this Sunday, is called the 4th Sunday of Advent. We call it that in the church calendar. But I have a better name. Know what it is? Mother's Day!!
Why Mother's Day? I'll tell you in a minute.
How many of you have mothers? Raise your hand. (time for laughter as everybody alive has or has had a mother) (chat about mothers in general)
Now here's why I call today Mother's Day.
In Luke's gospel we meet two mothers-to-be – Elizabeth and Mary.
Elizabeth is expecting to become a mother. Her child would be known as John the Baptist. Then Elizabeth shocks Mary by saying, “Mary, blessed are you among women.” She said this blessing because Mary would soon become the mother of Jesus – Jesus, Savior of the world.
When mother-to-be Mary hears Elizabeth's announcement she breaks out and sings a song of praise to God. The song starts out like this: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior...”
Then after some time, mother Mary would give birth to a little boy. She would wrap her baby Jesus in a blanket like this. (show blanket) (wrap a child in it)
Doesn't that feel warm and loving cozy? That's what mothers do to their babes.
So children, today we celebrate Mother's Day in a special way. We say thanks to mother-to-be Elizabeth for her amazing announcement. We say thanks to mother-to-be Mary.
(presenter lifts the blanket for all to see) You, Mary, would bring Jesus into our lives and our world. (to the children) Now kids, let’s get ready for Christmas!
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for Elizabeth and especially for Mary. Mary's son Jesus would one day change everything. Amen.
