Mysteries
Children's sermon
Object:
a magnifying glass
With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. (vv. 8b-10)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today we are going to talk about something that is very exciting. We are going to talk about mysteries! Who can tell me what a mystery is? (allow answers) A mystery is something that we cannot explain! How many of you have listened to mystery stories, read mystery books, or watched TV shows or movies about a mystery? (allow answers) We like to hear mystery stories. Have you ever heard of Sherlock Holmes? (allow answers) Sherlock Holmes is one of the most famous detectives ever! Sherlock Holmes is not a real person; he was a character in a series of very famous detective stories from the 1800s. In the stories, Sherlock Holmes used clues to come up with the answer to a case. He would use scientific instruments -- maybe like this magnifying glass -- to look for clues and solve the case.
Our second reading today talks about mysteries. It says, "God has made known to us the mystery of his will." Mystery? It seems like we are some kind of detectives for God! Wow! If we are detectives for God, where do you think we can find clues? (allow answers) I have an idea. We can find clues in the Bible! What do you think about that? (allow answers) We can also find clues in our Sunday school lessons and at Bible school in the summer. There are lots of places we can find clues to this mystery.
But wait a minute… what is this mystery? What are we trying to find out? (allow answers) It's hard to tell what the mystery is that the reading is talking about. Do you want to know what I think? (allow answers) I think that the mystery is how to live godly lives. And do you want to know what else I think? (allow answers) I think that there is more than one answer!
The Bible gives us a lot of examples of people who do the right thing and people who do the wrong thing. The more we study the Bible, the more we come to understand that God wants us to act in love, no matter what we do. He wants us to show our love for our neighbors and for the world around us. There are lots of ways to show that love! As you learn and grown in your life of faith, sometimes the right thing to do will seem like a mystery. It will take a lot of prayer and study of the Bible -- our "clues" -- to decide the best thing to do in some situations. But never fear! As our reading says, "God has made known to us the mystery of his will." All the clues are there. We just have to find them. Amen.
