No Fear
Children's sermon
Object:
Football or bicycle helmet
Do not fear... (v. 28)
Good morning girls and boys,
Have I got something to show you today! But first I have a question.
Are there things that make you afraid? (children answer)
Are you afraid of the dark? Are you afraid of thunder?
Are you afraid of getting sick or hurt in sports?
At Halloween you children love to do fun things that make others afraid. Ghosts and ghouls and goblins and kids with scary masks and costumes jump out and try to scare you. But you really aren't afraid are you? (children share)
There's a cartoon of a cat who is afraid of everything. They call him Fraidy Cat.
Have you ever seen him? (Optional: google photo of “Fraidy Cat”)
There's no need to be a “Fraidy Cat.” Here's why.
One day Jesus told his disciples “to not be afraid.” Jesus was preparing and protecting his disciples. Soon they would be going out to the mission fields where danger lurked.
Because Jesus told the disciples to not be afraid, Jesus also promises to protect you and me when we go out to tell the good news of the Kingdom of Heaven.
What is this I brought today? (shows helmet)
I love this helmet. This football helmet (put on helmet on self or child) protects you from getting hurt. Just as Jesus protects us every day.
How do we know that?
Jesus reminds the disciples and us that we are very valuable. God keeps his eye even on the sparrows. How many sparrows are there on earth? (children guess)
Goodness knows. You and I are are more valuable than sparrows.
In fact you and I are so valuable and precious that God even knows how many hairs are on our heads. How many hairs would you guess are on oyur head? (Have children guess)
With a God like that we have nothing to fear. So we can be courageous and bold to tell others about the love and forgiveness of Jesus, our Savior and Lord.
Prayer: Jesus, help us to be bold and not to be afraid when we tell others about you. Amen.
