No Ghost But God
Children's sermon
Object:
Grocery bag with a fish or fish symbol inside
“Touch me and see: for a ghost does not have flesh and bone.” (v. 39b)
Good morning girls and boys,
How are you this morning? I'm so glad you are here. I have an important question to ask you. Are you ready? (children answer)
Have you ever seen a real ghost? (children respond) I know you have seen make believe ghosts like at Halloween. Ghosts and goblins and white sheets and ghastly masks can be very scary. But usually, make believe ghosts are fun. We laugh. We enjoy them.
Some people though, sort of believe in real ghosts. Ghosts that are floating around and making surprise appearances. They jump out and say booo or whatever ghosts say if they even talk!
Once Jesus' disciples thought they saw a ghost. After Jesus rose from the dead he appeared among them. The disciples were startled and afraid. But they had no need to believe that Jesus was a real ghost.Jesus reassured them that he in fact had risen from the dead and was truly alive.
One way he proved that he was alive was like this: After Jesus showed his disciples his pierced hands and feet, he asked, “Have you anything to eat?
(Open the grocery bag and take out a representation of a fish) What kind of food is this?
(children answer)
The disciples had some fish. They gave it to him. Jesus showed them that by eating the fish, he was not a ghost, but a real human person, alive and hungry.
Like the disciples, people like me and kids like you, get afraid of things. We don't need to be afraid -- even of make believe ghosts. When Jesus says, “Peace be with you.”
we throw away our fears. We feel peace in our hearts.
Prayer: Thank you Jesus that we need to have no fear, nor any doubts about you. You are not a ghost. You are alive now and forever. Wow. Thanks. Amen.
