Not welcome
Children's sermon
Object:
a "No Trespassing" sign
And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of
the Samaritans to make ready for him; but they did not receive him, because his
face was set towards Jerusalem. (vv. 52-53)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have seen a sign like this? (hold up the sign and let them answer) Do you know what NO TRESPASSING means? (let them answer) It means that you are not welcome. Do not step on my property. Do not enter my building. That's what it means.
Did you know that a place in the Bible gave Jesus a "No Trespassing" sign when his disciples went to visit and prepare the people for Jesus' coming? The disciples were shocked. They knew that the Jewish people and the Samaritan people were not friends but they thought that everyone would welcome Jesus. After all, Jesus did no wrong. He had no hate. Jesus taught love. He taught forgiveness and sharing with neighbors. Why would anyone tell Jesus that he was not welcome?
It happens sometimes. Some people do not want to change their mind. Have you ever had someone that you went to school with or someone that came over to your house and all they wanted to do was say bad things to you, fight with you, and grab every toy and tell you that the toy was his or her toy? There are people like that in the world. It makes us mad. James and John were so mad that they wanted God to come down and cause such a fire that the Samaritans would all burn up. Jesus told them to forget it and not to think that way. God doesn't bring fire on people because they do not welcome him.
It is the same way with us. We cannot wish that something bad happens to a person in our neighborhood who comes over to our house and doesn't play fair. Jesus does not want us to be that way. You will never make a friend with someone you fight with and argue with over little things.
Instead, Jesus went on with his mission. He was heading to Jerusalem and nothing was going to take him away from his promise to God the Father.
We need to remember what Jesus, our leader, taught us to do: always be kind and do our best to make friends. If we are not able to make friends then put them at the top of our prayer list and ask God to help you change their minds. Always pray that God will bless them and show them the way to Jesus.
The next time you see a "No Trespassing" sign hanging on a building or nailed to a fence, I want you to think about the time the people of Samaria told the disciples that Jesus was not welcome. Also, remember that Jesus did not get angry but instead kept his promise to God the Father and went to Jerusalem. Amen.
