Offerings in the Hands of Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
Dollar Bill
The Point: When you offer your life to Jesus he can do wonderful things with it.
The Lesson: Thank you girls and boys for coming forward to share this time with me.
This morning I brought with me a dollar bill. When I was a child, a dollar could take you to a movie and buy some popcorn and a soda. Today a single dollar doesn't have much power to get what you may want. By itself a single dollar can't do much to help someone else or purchase much food for a hungry person. A lowly dollar needs to be given up to join other dollars in order to have the power to make a difference.
Our reading from John teaches us this special lesson. All day long Jesus had been teaching a large crowd about God's kingdom. The crowd was now hungry so Jesus asked Philip where they could buy bread for everyone. Philip would know because this was his hometown. Philip told Jesus that they didn't have enough dollars to buy that much bread. In a way Philip was saying all we have is a dollar and what can we do with that? Just then a small boy said," I have five rolls and two small fish". That child gave what he had to Jesus. Jesus blessed it and gave it to the disciples to share with the people. It fed everyone and with baskets of food left over.
When we take the little we have, a single dollar or a humble life, and give it to Jesus, he can do wonderful and amazing things with them. Turn around and look at everyone sitting in our congregation. Alone we can't do much but together with our lives offered to Jesus, we are the church. Together we are making a difference for the Kingdom of God. Our small individual offerings given to Jesus unites and empowers us to touch hearts and lives with Christ's saving love. Wow! That is a miracle, and you are an important part when you offer to Jesus what you have.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Lord Jesus, help us to realize how important our gifts and lives are to you and to your church. In the power of your Holy Spirit stir us to offer what we have, even our simple lives, to the work of your church. Bless and use the gifts of our lives Jesus to your glory and honor. In your holy name we pray. Amen.
