One in Jesus as a Church Family!
Children's sermon
Object:
a copy of the congregation photo directory (if no photo directory, a membership list will do)
The Point: As a member of Jesus' family of faith we need to work to keep our unity.
The Lesson: Good morning, girls and boys. Thank you for coming up and sharing with me this morning.
This is a copy of our church directory. (show directory) Here are pictures of our members and their families. (ask the children if they recognize anyone) I bet your picture is in here as well. (turn to the different children's family photos) The directory helps us to get to know one another. It also reminds us that we are a part of a very special family... the family of (use your church name).
Because we are in this family of faith, Jesus wants us to treat each other in a very special way.
Sometimes our friends may say something that hurts our feelings. Sometimes people we trust let us down, and we are hurt. Sometimes we don't do what we are supposed to do and we disappoint and hurt a friend, maybe someone who is a member of our family of faith.
If someone hurts us, we might want to hurt them back. We might feel like they should be punished for what they said or did. But Jesus wants to handle our disagreements and our hurts in a different way.
Jesus wants us to go to each other and to find a way to be friends again. If we can't do it alone we should bring a friend to help us as our lesson for today suggests. The goal is to help us to be a united family again -- a family that loves and cares for each other.
Yes, we will have our feelings hurt in our church family from time to time. So Jesus shows us a way to restore friendships and then to maintain the unity of love and caring in our church family. It is important because we need to show the world how Jesus forgives and loves us and wants to love others too.
Closing Prayer: Let us unite our hearts in prayer. Lord Jesus you have blessed us with a very special family of faith. Help us to always care for each other. When we have been hurt or when we have hurt someone give us the courage and strength to forgive and to seek forgiveness. Jesus may our church family reflect our unity in you. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
