Ten dimes
HAPPY THANKSGIVING to you! We call this day THANKSGIVING
because it is a day we set aside to give thanks to God for all
that God gives us. Not everybody is thankful to God for all that
they have. Other people are thankful, but they do not show it to
God. Jesus once healed ten men from a terrible skin disease.
Itchy skin is awful. These ten men were miserable -- until they
met Jesus. When they met him and he healed them, then they felt
good again. But a strange thing happened after these ten men were
healed. What was it? (Let them answer.) Only one of the ten
returned to give thanks to Jesus for what he had done.
Tonight I brought with me ten dimes and I want you to help me make up a story about these dimes. How do we tell the story? (Let them come up with a story plot. They may need some prompting so be sure and have your plot available if they don't come up with one.) One plot might be: These ten dimes all got some good news. They learned that they would become valuable collector's dimes and would be put in a nice dime collection album. They thought they were just dimes, but a collector decided that they were important and nice-looking dimes and that they should be put aside. The dimes never knew how important they were until the collector singled them out for special honor.
The dimes were so pleased with their good news. But only one of the dimes was so pleased that he gave thanks. Do you know how he gave thanks? He was put in the offering plate at church. That is how he gave thanks to God.
I'm so glad you are in this place today to give thanks to God. Many people treat Thanksgiving Day as a family day or a day for watching football. Some use it as a day off. Others call it "turkey day." But we know it as THANKSGIVING DAY and we give thanks to the one who gives us all things: God.
Dear God: We thank you for everything. Amen.
