A Peep Hole
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
a picture covered with another piece of paper that has a small square cut out of it. (a "peak hole")
I have something to show you today BUT... you only get to see a little bit of my picture -- a peep hole. (Show picture covered over with piece of paper with a small square cut out.) Does it make you wonder what the whole picture might look like?
In our story today we learn of how Jesus was with three of his good friends on top of a mountain. While they were there something very unusual happened. It says in Matthew 17:2 that "the face of Jesus shone like the sun" -- that's bright! And his clothes became as "white as the light." And then... in the next verse it tells us two other people from a long time ago in the Bible appeared. It says, "Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah. Then a bright cloud surrounded them and they heard the voice of God!" But then the next moment it was all gone and Jesus was only with them.
It was like the disciples only got to see a small picture of something much bigger -- sort of like our picture. It is just a peak.
Do you think they wanted to see more? Yes and no. It says in 17:16, "When the disciples heard this they fell facedown to the ground terrified." They had a little "peak" of what heaven and God's world is like. Do you want to see more of my picture? (Show them at the end)
How do we apply this to our life?
Do you ever think about heaven or do you just concentrate on what your everyday life is about with school, playing, eating, and having fun with friends? Maybe it would be good for us to have a "peak" of thinking and learning about heaven and how amazing our God is. If we did, we might want to listen more and pay more attention to God's word because we would realize how amazing that God is talking to us and how mighty and powerful he is.
