Playing referee
Children's Activity
Object:
SHARING THIS WEEK'S GOSPEL THEME
AT SUNDAY SCHOOL AND AT HOME
Materials:
A table setting for each child
Fruit or other snack
Water or clear juice
Slips of red paper
Directions:
Have a "tea party" to practice good manners. At the beginning of the session, discuss what good manners you are expected to have at a tea party. (Sit up straight, no elbows on the table, use an inside voice, sip your drink, eat with silverware, put your napkin in your lap, etc.) Choose one child to be the "referee." (If desired, have an adult helper be the referee.) Give that child "red cards" -- slips of red paper. When the tea party begins, have the referee walk around the table. He or she should give red cards to children who do not follow the manners listed at the beginning of the session. If desired, give other children the opportunity to be a referee. The children with the fewest red slips "win." At the end of the lesson, talk about how we all make mistakes, even if we are trying to do the right thing. Whether it's at a fake tea party or in our own lives, we should be kind when we point out the mistakes of others.
