An A Plus Teacher
Children's sermon
Object:
A large “A” and a large “F” on tag board or projected slide
“They were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the Scribes.” (v. 22)
Good morning girls and boys,
I am so delighted to see you on this Lord's day. Because you are here I know the day is already a beautiful day. We get to worship God. We get to learn about Jesus.
How many of you have teachers? At school? At church? At other places? (name places you know the children are involved such as dance lessons, sports, etc.)
Do you have a favorite teacher? (children name favorite teachers as time allows)
Why does that favorite teacher come to mind? Do you think someday you might be a teacher? Did you know that by your example you are already teaching others?
Now I have a “thumbs up, thumbs down” game to play about teachers. We're going to grade an imaginary teacher. You give an “A” with thumbs up and a clap, clap for excellence and an “F” with thumbs down and a stomp, stomp for failure: A teacher is smart. (kids vote) A teacher knows her subject. (kids vote) A teacher is mean. (kids vote) A teacher does not assign homework. (kids vote)A teacher prepares lesson plans before class. (kids vote) A teacher is late for class. (kids vote) (presenter may add items unique to the situation)
Now I'm gong to tell you about the greatest teacher of all. Jesus was teaching in the synagogue one day and the people were astonished at his teachings. Jesus spoke from the heart and knew what he was teaching about.
Jesus was in that synagogue that Sabbath at Capernaum, because the synagogue for the Jewish people was their school. The temple, on the other hand, was for worship, prayers and sacrifices. So how did the people grade Jesus that day? Thumbs up or thumbs down?
Oh yes, thumbs up. They were thunderstruck! He taught with knowledge and authority.
As baptized believers how do you and I treat our teachers? We treat our teachers with thumbs up when giving them courtesy, respect, and genuine interest in their teachings.
Prayer: Jesus, you are the greatest teacher of all. Thank you. Thank you. Amen.
