The Power of God Comes to Us
Children's sermon
Object:
Balloon
The Point: God sends us the power of the Holy Spirit that we might live as children of God.
The Lesson: Welcome, children. I am thankful that you came up to share with me.
Today is a special Sunday in the life of our church. We celebrate Jesus sending us the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the gift of God's Spirit, we have the power to understand and grow as children of God. God's Spirit helps us to know Jesus and to receive his guidance for our lives.
The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit came like a great wind that filled the house where the followers of Jesus were. In the gift of the Spirit they were filled with understanding and began to tell everyone about the good news in Jesus: that Jesus is our Savior and unites us as God's family.
I brought a balloon with me this morning. It doesn't look like much does it? It is limp and flat. What if I blew some wind into it? (Blow the balloon up and hold it shut.) Now it looks like a balloon. What do you think will happen if I let it go? You are right. It will fly all over. The wind I blow into the balloon will power it to action. Watch as I let it go!
The Holy Spirit fills our lives with power too. When we read the Bible, the Holy Spirit gives understanding. When we tell someone about Jesus, the Holy Spirit helps us to find the words. When our faith is unsure and doubt creeps in, the Holy Spirit will give us guidance and encouragement.
Without the Holy Spirit we are like the balloon with no air in it. We would be flat without power to fly. But when Jesus sends the Holy Spirit into our lives, we are empowered to be children of God. It isn't what we can do. It is what God can do through us that is so special.
When you see a balloon at a birthday, or baptism, or a special celebration, remember a great wind, the Holy Spirit, has been blown into life giving you life as a child of God.
Prayer: Children of God, let us hold hands and unite our hearts as we pray to Jesus. Lord Jesus, you promised to send us the Holy Spirit. May that same Spirit blow into our lives and hearts. Give a fresh anointing to these your children and to all of us as a family of faith. May the Holy Spirit truly empower us. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
