Children's sermon
Object:
a picture of the President of the United States
Who can tell me what prayer is? (responses) When have you heard people pray? (responses) What kinds of things have you heard people pray about? (responses) We can pray for help, for forgiveness, for guidance. We can say prayers of thanks and prayers that tell God how wonderful he is. The Bible tells us that we should pray for other people too.
Who is this? (hold up the picture) This is a picture of the President of the United States. His name is George W. Bush, and he is a very powerful man. He's in charge of a lot. It's really important that we keep him in our prayers. We pray for him in our church services. Why do you think we need to pray for our president? (find out what the children think) Listen to these two Bible verses. (read verses 1 and 2) Now why do you think we should pray for our president?
The Bible lesson speaks of kings and all who are in high positions. George W. Bush is the leader of our country. We should pray that our president makes wise decisions. We need him to be careful in choosing how to lead the many people of our country. America is a big place. It's full of lots of very different people, all of whom need different things. We all have different opinions about how the president should spend money, how he should spend his time, how he should be with the leaders of the other countries of the world. Sometimes people can get into serious arguments about what they believe. In the 1800s we even had a Civil War because the people of America couldn't agree.
We need to pray that our leader can do the right things and make the right decisions. We need to pray that our president will ask for God's help, because only God knows the solutions to the very complicated problems our country faces. Pray for our president and all people who are leaders.
Prayer: God, today we pray for George W. Bush. Please keep him safe and help him be the kind of leader you want him to be. Amen.
