Pray for your leaders
Children's sermon
Object:
pictures of any of these leaders: the president of the USA, your
governor, your senator, congressman, or mayor
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and
thanksgivings should be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high
positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity.
(vv. 1-2)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you know the name of the president of the United States? (let them answer) Very good! How many of you know the name of the governor of our state? (let them answer) Pretty good, not as many as know the president. How many of you know the name of one of our two senators from this state? (let them answer) Can you tell me the name of your congressman? How many of you know the name of our mayor? (let them answer) These are very important people. Let me show you a picture of each of them. (Show them the pictures and say their names, so they learn the names that go with the pictures.)
Let me tell you why it is important that you know about these people. I want you to learn their names and faces because we are going to pray about them. We are going to pray and ask God to care for them. We should pray for our leaders every day. If you were the president or the mayor do you think you would like to have every person that lives in our city pray for you?
Let's pretend that you are the president. (choose a volunteer) How would you feel if every one of us prayed for you every day? We should pray to God and ask that our president has good health, that he is well rested so that he can make good decisions, and that he will use wisdom and understanding when he is talking to other presidents, kings, and prime ministers. We should pray that he will keep his faith in God and remember the needs of the poor. We should pray that his family is a joy to him, and that he is concerned about our earth. We are going to pray these prayers for every person that has a name to go with these pictures.
Why are we going to do this? Because we want a world of peace, where every person has food to eat, clothes to wear, and a home to live in. We are praying for these people because they make big decisions, the kind of decisions that are important to everyone of us. Saint Paul wrote a letter to a friend, Timothy, and shared these ideas with him. We don't just pray for our friends. We also pray for our enemies so that they will become our friends.
Prayer is not just words. It is our deepest feelings. The next time you see one of these pictures in the newspaper or on television, I want you to remember to pray for them in great joy and thanksgiving. Amen.
