Precious in his sight
Children's sermon
Object:
something bought at a garage sale
Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God's sight. (v. 4)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today we're going to talk about junk. How many of you have ever been to a garage sale? (allow answers) What do people sell at garage sales? (allow answers) People sell their junk! They have garage sales to sell things that they don't want or don't need.
But there is an old saying that says, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." That certainly relates to garage sales! Even though one person might think something is junk, you or I might go to the garage sale and think that thing is really great! (show item bought from a garage sale)
There is a poet named Shel Silverstein who writes poems for children. His book Where the Sidewalk Ends has a poem in it about junk. The poem is called "Hector the Collector." It's about a boy who collects things: he collects burnt-out lightbulbs and bits of wire, he collects broken belts and chairs that are missing legs. Hector thinks all of these things are great treasures, and he treats them like they are something special. At the end of the poem, he invites everyone in town: "Come and see my treasures!" he says. All the people come… but, as the poem says, "All the silly sightless people/ Came and looked… and called it junk."
Sometimes the value of a thing depends on who is looking at it. Some people might think you are a wonderful, beautiful, worthwhile person -- but other people might not like you. It can be hurtful when others don't like you! But no matter how worthless people might make you feel, there is someone who will always love you. God loves you! As the Sunday school song says, "YOU are precious in his sight." We aren't junk to God, and God is the one who matters. Amen.
