Prepare a place
Children's sermon

In my Father's house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? (v. 2)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today we are going to talk about babies. How many of you have a baby in your house? (allow answers) When you were getting ready for that baby to come, what did you have to do? (allow answers) We have to do a lot of things to prepare for babies! We have to paint a room, we have to get a crib, we have to find blankets and baby clothes and maybe a teddy bear or baby toys. (show baby rattle) We spend lots of time preparing our homes for a baby.
Some of us might not remember getting ready for a baby, though. How about guests? How many of you have had friends or family members come and visit your house -- and maybe stay overnight? (allow answers) How did you prepare for your guests? (allow answers) When we are having special guests over, we usually clean the house carefully. We make sure that everything is put away in its proper place, and we make sure that our furniture is dusted and straightened up. If we have a guest bedroom, we change the sheets on the bed and open the curtains. If we don't have a guest room, we might put sleeping bags on the floor or blow up air mattresses. Just like we do a lot of work to prepare for a baby, we do a lot of work to prepare for guests.
Our gospel lesson today talks about Jesus preparing a place for us. Think about the care we take making sure that our house is ready for a baby or ready for guests. Now think about how much more care Jesus must take to prepare a place for us in heaven. When it is our time to go to be with God, we can bet that we will be welcomed with a great celebration! There will be a place ready and prepared for us -- we will be honored guests, greeted with joy. Doesn't that sound nice? (allow answers) We won't like leaving our loved ones behind, but it will be okay. Jesus is preparing a place for us. And we can trust that he will prepare with love. Amen.
